I am always honored to capture families all over the New England area. Some days I act as a child beach photographer in Portland, Maine or in the gardens of Boston, MA and other days I find myself snuggling newborns in the Plymouth, Massachusetts studio. Both types of sessions are equally rewarding. It is always extra special when one of my newborn clients comes back to see me for a one year session. Beautiful Maria brought her older sister Monica along for some extra fun. I can not get over how much she has grown! Those curls! Big sister was as polite and outgoing as always.

Their mama always goes the extra mile to add a pop to our session together. She had her mother create these adorable fish which we hung from a piece of driftwood. There were extra to fill the pink finish bucket. I love incorporating simple props like these into my beach photos. They add just the right amount of whimsey and allow the children’s expressions to truly shine as they play and explore with their new toys. I truly believe your session should be a combination of posed images and fun candids. Four year old Monica did not disappoint!

I couldn’t help but smile as I edited these images of Monica twirling and dancing all over the beach with her lace umbrella. So. Many. Cute. Expressions! It is amazing that so much personality could be contained in such a little body.

Our children have been invited to quite a few birthday parties this month. In addition, we celebrated our daughter’s third birthday.  As moms, we put a lot of work into creating these special days for our children. It’s important to document the day through photographs! Let’s talk about a few things to remember when it comes time to capturing your special moments. Here are four quick and easy birthday party photography tips.

How to Photography Birthday Party

Birthday Party Photography Tips

My little girl is all about sparkles, unicorns, and playing dress up. I pulled up a few ideas on Pinterest, and let her choose this pastel unicorn theme for her big day. Three of her friends joined us to keep things easy. We played with homemade play dough, ate snacks and hot chocolate, and painted nails. I wanted to enjoy the day in addition to taking pictures and tried to follow these guidelines.

Tip 1: Let in the Light

As your setting up the party, open the blinds and turn on all the lights. More light will give your photos that bright and airy feel.

As a side note, I ordered the balloons and some paper goods from Tom Kat Studio. Great prices and fast shipping!

Tip 2: Don’t Forget the Details

You have probably put a good amount of thought and effort into the little details of the party. Don’t forget to capture them! Taking close up photos of the different decor items you created will help tell the story of your day. A few minutes before guests arrive, walk around and take some close up images of your favorite parts of the party. Don’t forget to take a few photos of the birthday child too!

Tip 3: Move and Snap

“Move and snap” goes through my head often when working with smaller children – even during my client sessions. I always think of Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde…LOL! During the party, don’t be afraid to change your position instead of trying to move the kids. Walk around to get different angles, taking pictures as you move. Move your body. Then, snap the photo. This will allow you to capture a variety of images from the same activity without seeming redundant. Get close to your subject, move back, then go to the side. I only took photos at three different times during our party. This allowed me to enjoy the moments AND get a variety of images that captured our day.

Tip 4: Give Yourself Credit

You’ve worked hard to make this day amazing. Not to mention that you deserve some applause for creating such a wonderful tiny human! At the end of every party after we say goodbye to our guests, I make sure to jump in a few pictures with my child. Make sure you get a few with your sweet baby too!

Can you believe that we are already moving swiftly through 2017. The fall and holiday season is one of my favorite times of year, but it always sneaks up on me. Do you find the same to be true? I have missed spending time on this little piece of the internet, and I look forward to sharing lots of beautiful newborn photographs with you over the coming weeks.

Meet Ruby. This precious girl visited me last year for her first portraits, and I truly enjoyed connecting with her family. Turns out, her father and I have the same alma mater – Gordon College – and several mutual friends. During our pre-session consult, her mother gave me some great inspiration when she shared the fabric used in her nursery bedding. We decided to keep the backdrops creamy and neutral while also pulling in some muted coral and buttery yellow tones. Earthy elements – like lots of greenery, barn wood, and the egg wreath – were a must to compliment the laid back feel of their home.

Can we just take a minute to stare at her hair?!? Absolutely gorgeous. And those eyelashes! I am sure there are quite a few of you that would pay money for lashes like Miss Ruby.

Have you been wondering if a custom newborn session might be right for your family? Ruby’s parents did quite a bit of research before contacting me. I always encourage my prospective clients to browse my newborn portfolio. Then, you can feel free to call me at (336) 688-8723. I am more than happy to talk with you about your vision for your photos, and we can collaborate on how to best display your photos in your home. My goal is to keep your baby safe and happy while we document all the tiny details you will want to remember forever.
